Sadie Hough
Counselling in Norwich, Norfolk
'Life unfolds, bad things happen. When it’s just too big for us and our coping fails, counselling is there.'
Why try counselling?
You might be struggling to cope with loss and grief; facing issues with your work, health or relationships; trying to overcome events in the past, or making decisions about your future. I can support you.
I offer person-centred counselling, which is based on the belief that each of us has the natural tendency for self-discovery and direction. This means that you, and only you, can decide the meaning of your experiences and what you should do with your life.
You could use words like 'learning', 'growth', 'healing' or 'creativity' to describe this process.
What to expect
I offer face-to-face counselling sessions for adults (18+) in comfortable and discreet therapy rooms in the centre of Norwich. My fee is £50 for a 60-minute session.
In our sessions my role will be to create an environment and a relationship that you can use to find your own direction. I will do this by:
listening carefully to understand your thoughts and feelings as fully as possible
accepting you as you are, and not telling you what you should do or how you should feel
being a genuine and trustworthy person, willing to be honest and open
I will not be in the role of 'expert', or direct you to any particular course of action. Instead we will be working and learning together.
Learning about yourself can be exciting and deeply satisfying. You might start to feel less overwhelmed, more open to new experiences, and more trusting of yourself. You may also find it easier to be honest about who you are and how you feel.
About me
As a counsellor I have worked with individuals who are feeling depressed, anxious, or experiencing panic. I have supported people who:
are feeling overwhelmed by the loss of a job, the end of a relationship, or the death of someone
have experienced trauma recently or in their childhood
are trying to make changes in their life and relationships
finding it difficult to express their feelings
Alongside my independent work I provide low-cost counselling for a local charity.
I also have an interest in working with people who are facing, or are thinking about, the end of life. This includes people with serious illnesses, as well as their family and friends.
I am a member of End of Life Doula UK and have supported people at the end of life through the Anne Robson Trust.

Please email me to arrange an initial session.
This first session will give us a chance to get to know each other and see if I’m the right counsellor for you. We can talk about what brings you to counselling and what your hopes are.
I offer an initial session of either 60-minutes at my standard fee of £50, or a shorter 30-minute session for £25.
Whether you are familiar with counselling or have never considered it before, I would love to hear from you. I've also put together some frequently asked questions, which you might find helpful.

Frequently asked questions
Counselling can sometimes feel a bit mysterious, but you should always know how we will be working together.
If you have any questions about the information on this page, or if something is unclear or missing, please let me know.
What type of counselling do you offer?
I usually call my work 'counselling', but it can also be called 'psychotherapy', 'talking therapy' or just 'therapy'. All these terms mean talking to a trained person about your thoughts and feelings. The type of counselling I offer is known as 'person-centred'. It was developed by Carl Rogers in the 1940s and is based on the belief that each of us has the natural tendency for self-discovery and direction if given the right conditions. You don't need to know about the theory in order to feel the benefit, but if you're someone who likes to know more I would be happy to talk about it or suggest other resources.
Is there evidence that counselling helps?
There is decades of research supporting the effectiveness of person-centred counselling. Since its beginnings, research has shown that person-centred counselling can be helpful in a number of ways.Recent examples include researchers reviewing hundreds of studies from the past sixty years. They confirmed that person-centred counselling can help people make positive changes in their lives. These changes can also continue after the counselling ends [1].In another study, researchers found that person-centred counselling helped people feel more authentic, enhanced their overall wellbeing, and reduced feelings of distress [2].

What qualifications and experience do you have?
I have a Postgraduate Diploma in Person-Centred Counselling. This is a level seven qualification, which means it is at the level of a master's degree. Alongside my independent work I am a counsellor at a charity that provides counselling services.I am also completing a Diploma in Person-Centred Approaches to Death and Dying with the organisation Living Well Dying Well. I am a member of End of Life Doula UK and have supported people at the end of life through the Anne Robson Trust.
What professional standards do you work to?
I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). It is one of the organisations that sets and maintains standards for counsellors. You can find me on the BACP Register and you can read about my commitments to clients as a BACP member. This means that I have the relevant qualifications, supervision and insurance, and that I follow a code of ethics. It also means that you, as my client, have access to advice about counselling and a complaints process, should you ever need it.I hold an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate, which is updated yearly.
Will you diagnose me?
I will not diagnose you with any mental or physical illness, disorder or condition. Person-centred counselling is about your experiences and what they mean to you. It does not rely on any particular label for your thoughts, feelings or behaviours. This can be one of its benefits. If you have an existing diagnosis, or if you are in the process of seeking one, you are welcome to talk about what it means to you during our sessions.During counselling you should seek medical advice where appropriate or necessary. Particularly if you are taking prescription medication and you intend to change or stop your use of it.
How do I get help in an emergency?
I am not able to provide an emergency service. If you are struggling to cope, the Samaritans or the Shout Crisis Text Line are available at any time of day or night. The charity Mind provides information on how to help yourself cope during a crisis. If you are having suicidal thoughts you may want to create a safety plan. You can also call NHS Direct on 111, get help from 111 online, or attend your local hospital emergency department. If there is a serious risk to life, call the emergency services on 999.
Where will sessions take place?

Blue badge on-street car parking bays are on Bethel Street, outside City Hall. Bicycle parking is on Gaol Hill or Pottergate and motorcycle parking is on St Peters Street.
How accessible are your counselling rooms?
While I would like to be able to offer counselling in a fully accessible space, I am currently based in rooms on the first and second floor. These are accessed by stairs.I am keen to make counselling as accessible and comfortable for you as I can. I am happy to provide detailed information about the building's facilities and access routes in a format that works for you. If you would like to discuss what adjustments are possible, please let me know.If your needs change during our work together I encourage you to let me know, so that we can talk about how we might meet them.
What should I talk about in counselling sessions?
Your sessions are for you. It is important that you get what you need from them. You will decide what to talk about in each session. Sometimes I might ask questions to check I have understood fully, but you will always have control over the topic and pace of our conversations. You might already know what you want to explore, or it might take time to work out. It may also change. I believe in your ability to sense what is relevant to you in each session. Even when this feels unclear. You might find yourself talking about things like:
current thoughts, feelings or sensations
your relationship with yourself and others
difficulties you are currently facing
experiences from your past or present
how you feel in counselling sessions
changes you are noticing
Sessions might include periods of silence, tears, and the expression of strong emotion. That is okay.
How often are counselling sessions?
Typically we will meet once a week for a 60-minute session. We will usually keep to the same day and time. This can help maintain momentum in our work together. It also helps me make sure I can be available for you. There may be reasons that this frequency or length of session wouldn't work for you. If that is the case we can talk about it and see if we can agree on a suitable alternative.
How long will I come to counselling for?
I offer open-ended counselling. You may have a certain amount of time you want to set aside for counselling. Or you might prefer to see how it goes. Sometimes people find that a few sessions are what they need, while others continue for longer. When we first meet, we can talk about your expectations. We will review our work together regularly to see how things are going. We might decide to use a simple questionnaire to help us with this.
How do I decide when to end counselling?
I believe that you are the best person to decide when you want to end counselling. But sometimes this might feel difficult, even when you are satisfied with the progress you have made. Sessions might have become an important part of your routine. Or endings might feel hard to bring up.As part of our regular reviews we will talk about how and when you might decide to stop. I will encourage you to notice when sessions are starting to feel different to you.I believe how we end our time together is important. In our final sessions we might want to reflect on the work we have done and how it feels to bring it to an end. You might also want to explore your next steps.
Is counselling totally confidential?
It's important for you to know that there are times when a counsellor might have to share some information with another person. This can be because the law requires it, or if you or someone else is in serious danger. I will talk to you about this and make sure you have written information so that you can make an informed decision.
Will we be in touch between sessions?
We will not usually be in touch outside of our sessions, except to arrange or change appointments. If you need to contact me about something I will reply when I can, but it might not be on the same day.If you intend to share private or sensitive information with me by email please think about how to keep it safe. You might want to encrypt or password protect your email. Or it might be better to wait until our next session. If we see each other outside of our sessions, I will not say hello unless you do. This is to protect your privacy. If you approach me when I am with someone else I will not tell them you are my client, but they might assume it.I will not knowingly connect with you on any social media platforms.
How do I cancel a session?
If you need to cancel a session, please let me know as soon as you can. If you cancel 48 hours or more before your appointment start time, there will be no charge. If you cancel with less notice, or if you miss your session without getting in touch, you will need to pay the full fee before your next appointment.
What is a 'dual relationship'?
A 'dual relationship' is when a counsellor and client have a connection outside of counselling. For example, we might have a mutual friend, attend the same events, or you might know my supervisor. If you think this might be the case, please tell me so that we can talk about it. I will do the same.Sometimes it is not a problem. But if a mutual connection makes it hard for you to talk openly, or for me to hear you fully, then I might not be the right counsellor for you. In that case, I would do my best to help you find another.
Do you accept gifts?
I do not usually accept gifts in my counselling work. If it feels important to you to mark the end of our work together, we can try and find a way that feels comfortable for both of us.
Can I give feedback about counselling?
I am committed to reflecting on and improving how I work for the benefit of clients. I am open to your feedback at any time while we are working together. When we are done, I will ask if you have any comments or suggestions you would like to share with me. This could be about our sessions, how things are organised, or how we communicate.
What should I do if I have a concern about counselling?
If you have any concerns about our work together at any stage, please let me know. It might feel difficult, but if we can resolve it together it might strengthen our relationship and your counselling.I aim to treat everyone fairly and without discrimination. If I say or do something that feels unfair, please let me know so I can make changes. This also includes when I overlook something. No issue is too small to talk about. If you feel I haven't responded well enough, you can get confidential help with counselling concerns from the BACP.
